Freedom from seizures, and why it is important to improve the quality of life of patients
Shymkent is hosting the "School of Epilepsy", initiated by the head of the Department of Neurology of the South Kazakhstan Medical Academy, Professor N.A. Zharkinbekova, which is designed to familiarize doctors with the current situation in neurology, as well as with modern tactics and patient management. Particular emphasis is placed on the analysis of clinical cases. Leading neurologists from İstanbul üniversitesi-Cerrahpaşa of Turkey and medical clinics in Astana, Almaty, Shymkent shared their practical experience. On the third day of the School, the townspeople together with their children signed up to receive foreign guests. After reviewing the case histories and instrumental data, ultrasound, MRI, the guests answered their parents' questions.
As Professor N.A. Zharkinbekova noted in her report, “research work on the detection of epilepsy in patients, their treatment, registration both in the city of Shymkent and in the regions of the South Kazakhstan region were carried out in 2009-2011. The work was carried out by our research team. The presented tables and diagrams clearly show the picture of morbidity and drug treatment of patients in childhood, adolescence and adulthood. Today, however, there is no such picture, which is regrettable and alarming, since there is no clear data on the number of patients, whether their disease is in the active phase, whether there is a remission, how many patients with epileptic syndrome were identified, when convulsions first began, their duration in first months, years. The explanation is simple: no funding. There is hope only for the won state grant from the Ministry of Science and Education of Kazakhstan. In the budget, apparently, there is a shortage of funds for research work in this direction.
Dr. Prof. Cigdem Ozkara, İstanbul üniversitesi-Cerrahpaşa, Cerrahpaşa Medical Faculty, shared her experience for three days, because there is something to tell and show in detail both on MRI and video frames. And on the other hand, Cigdem Ozkara, asked about the number of patients with epilepsy in Shymkent and Kazakhstan, how many of them suffer from drug resistance? What modern drugs are used in treatment? And also - she drew the attention of neuropathologists, residents to the ability to correctly place emphasis when obtaining MRI results, filling out case histories indicating the first and more frequent cases of seizures. And how important it is to resort to a ketogenic diet.
Dr. Prof. Mustafa Uzan, İstanbul üniversitesi-Cerrahpaşa, Department of Neurosurgery, also shared his experience, answered questions of interest, advised which areas of the brain to pay attention to in various types of epilepsy.
Presentations were made by: L.O. Dairbayeva - Director of the Kazakhstan National Antiepileptic League A.M. Elubayeva - Director of the "Center for Neurology and Epilepsy" "Zhanuya Medicine Ortalygy", Z.K. Tanabayeva - Head of the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation of the MD City Hospital No. 2 in Astana, etc.
