Laboratory of medicinal plants
SCIENTIFIC-RESEARCH LABORATORY OF MEDICINAL PLANTS
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF PHARMACOGNOSIA
The staff of the Medicinal Plant Research Laboratory includes one senior research assistant, two research assistants, one senior laboratory assistant and one laboratory assistant.
The purpose of the laboratory of medicinal plants: Research of medicinal plants of the Flora of Kazakhstan and development of medicines based on them.
Relevance of the topic. Currently, the share of herbal products in the global pharmaceutical market is over 40%. Moreover, in recent years, there has been a pronounced tendency to its increase, and according to the forecasts of the World Health Organization, over the next ten years, the share of herbal medicines in the total volume of medicines will be more than 60%.
More than 80% of wild-growing plant raw materials for the pharmaceutical industry of the USSR were harvested in Kazakhstan and Central Asia. At the same time, less than 3% of the total harvested amount of raw materials was processed in Kazakhstan, and the processing consisted mainly in the manufacture of the simplest galenic forms (tinctures and liquid extracts). As a result of this situation, the republic suffered significant losses, since the cost of finished dosage forms produced on the basis of domestic plant raw materials and then imported to Kazakhstan from neighboring countries exceeded the cost of the initial plant raw materials by 7-10 times.
The above emphasizes the expediency and timeliness of scientific research in this direction.
Scientific novelty of the study. The novelty of scientific research of the laboratory of medicinal plants lies in phytochemical (determination of the chemical composition of plant raw materials, isolation and establishment of the structure of new natural compounds, development of new methods for the isolation of biologically active substances) and pharmacognostic (determination of the anatomical and morphological features of new plant species of interest) studies, which have not been previously studied plant species growing in the Turkestan region, in order to identify new domestic sources of medicines.
Tasks of the laboratory:
1. Study of unexplored and identification of promising plant species of the flora of Kazakhstan for use in medicine.
2. Development of promising methods for the isolation of biologically active substances from plant objects.
3. Investigation of the chemical structure of biologically active compounds from plant objects.
4. Study of the biological properties of extracts and biologically active substances from plant materials.
5. Development of biologically active additives, fees and medicines based on medicinal plants in Kazakhstan.

Research directions
Pharmacognostic and phytochemical studies
According to the individual plans of research work of the staff and the teaching staff of the department, the following types of work were performed:
a) Carrying out the determination of the authenticity and diagnostics of the morphological and anatomical features of the raw materials of the studied plants. Determination of the reserves of the studied medicinal plants.
b) Carrying out commodity analysis of raw materials, acceptance and sampling for analysis and test methods.
c) Determination of good quality, fineness, content of impurities, total ash and ash insoluble in 10% hydrochloric acid, and also carried out qualitative reactions for the content of biologically active substances in plant raw materials.
d) Extraction and column chromatography are carried out to isolate individual substances.
Phytochemical studies have isolated more than 20 individual biologically active substances from the plants studied in the laboratory. Their chemical structures have been established on the basis of modern spectral methods.
Research is being carried out to determine the quantitative content of biologically active substances in plant materials and extracts. Optimal methods for the isolation of natural compounds are being studied.
Within the framework of initiative research (on self-financing), the following projects were carried out (up to 2017):
1) Study of the Small-flowered Catnip, Zizifora thin, Zopnik willow, Asiatic mint and Clary sage of the Lamiaceae flora of South Kazakhstan. Scientific adviser: prof. Patsaev A.K.
2) Phytochemical studies of a plant of the genus Kasatik of the flora of Kazakhstan. Scientific adviser: prof. Patsaev A.K.
3) Pharmacognostic studies of plants of the genus Yarrow and Cornflower of the Asteraceae family. Scientific adviser: prof. Patsaev A.K.
4) Study of triterpenoids of plants of the genus Astragalus of South Kazakhstan. Scientific adviser: prof. Patsaev A.K.
5) Study of the influence of the components of plants of the genus Astragalus on the effectiveness of complex treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity. Scientific adviser: Ph.D. G.A. Nurgazieva
6) Study of the influence of the components of plants of the genus Wormwood on the effectiveness of complex treatment of inflammatory diseases of the oral cavity. Scientific adviser: Ph.D. G.A. Nurgazieva
