In Azerbaidzhan, one of the corners of centuries-old forging traditions is the village of Demirchi, located 30 kilometres from the city of Shamakhi. And although blacksmithing has been flourishing here for a long time, the village used to be called Guneychay, by analogy with the tributary of the Pirsaatchay River, which flows near the village. Only later was the village renamed Demirchi - in honour of the main craft of the residents (dəmirçi is translated from Azerbaijani as a blacksmith).
They live in the village mainly Tats, the people of the Iranian language group, historically living in the Caucasus. Tat is not at all like Farsi and is one of the endangered languages. Remarkably, Demirchi is located only 20 kilometres from another famous city of artisans - Lahich, in the neighbouring Ismailli district, where the tats also live.
